About Harmony North Chorus

Harmony North Chorus is a membership organization of female singers, who meet regularly to practice, perform, socialize, and have fun. We currently have over 25 singers of all ages, all walks of life, and all parts of the Collingwood and surrounding area.

Our mission statement:

Harmony North Chorus "Celebrates the promotion of musical excellence and personal growth opportunities in a supportive and caring environment. We are committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performance."

Harmony North Chorus is a performance driven chorus singing at annual shows, a number of community events, and at an annual competition.  We are available tto sing at your next function or event.  If you are looking for a unique musical experience to liven up your event, please check out our Hire Us section.

Education is  a unique part of Harmony North Chorus.  Vocal instruction is a regular part of rehearsals.  Our Director Catherine Robertson is a skilled vocal teacher with many years of experience in teaching both young and old, and with various choral groups.  Developing our vocal skills is a very important component of the chorus experience and striving for new heights in our overall sound.  Two times a year we receive coaching from Master Directors in the barbershop artform where we broaden our horizons, become better singers, performers and learn some tricks of the trade.

She has been director of music at Central United church in Barrie for 20 years, and was the founder/director of The Barrie Regional Youth Choir, the Wasaga Beach Children’s Choir and Mosaic (a choir for adults that started out for men and ladies and then became a ladies four-part choir). She was also the director of The Huronia Choristers, in Elmvale.

As a professional soloist she has studied in Ontario, British Columbia, and London England, and has sung throughout Ontario, the west coast of Canada and the USA, and at many of the great Cathedrals of Britain and France, including Yorkminster, Canterbury, St Paul’s and Notre Dame in Paris.

At present she is an occasional teacher with the Bluewater District School Board, at the elementary level, specializing in music, and also the director of The Goldenaires in Meaford , as well as the Director of Harmony North.

In the spring of every year, Harmony North Chorus participates in the Region 16 chorus competition in Syracuse ,New York. Competitions are a special time for quartets and choruses from our region to come together to sing for each other, and get some constructive feedback from a panel of judges. The winners of the regional competition in both quartet and chorus categories get to travel to International Competition, which is held annually in the fall in a selected US city.

Most choruses have a number of members who form their own vocal quartets in addition to singing with the chorus. Harmony North Chorus currently is home to a number of wonderful quartets, and we are very proud of them! Click here to see our quartet section to learn more about them.

Harmony North Chorus is a chapter of Sweet Adelines, International, a non-profit organization of approximately 30,000 members in choruses and quartets, worldwide. The Headquarters is in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
